As I mentioned in my Netgear router review, I had ordered a Linksys WRT54GL to replace it. I gotta say that after being a happy Netgear user for many years, a few months of using this router has made me a Linksys convert. Note: If you don’t care about messing with the firmware, you can save a few bucks and buy the WRT54G instead.

There’s really not much to say about the WRT54G/WRT54GL that hasn’t already been said in the thousands of other reviews out there, but I do want to mention a few things…

One of the main things I always read was that Netgear routers are easier to setup than Linksys, which I would definitely disagree with. I’m not saying it was hard setting up the Netgear, but it was definitely more work than the Linksys.

Also, I’m not getting the random connection drops that I got with the WGR614. I’ve left SSH sessions open for days without being disconnected, which I could never do with the Netgear router.

Temperature: The Linksys doesn’t seem to get nearly as host as the Netgear did. I’ve read stories about people drilling holes and mounting fans on the WGR614… which doesn’t seem like something you should have to do to a brand new router. I won’t be drilling any holes in the WRT54GL. ;)

Anyway, I’d definitely recommend the Linksys WRT54GL if you’re shopping for a wireless router.
